Kicking off

The Patriots fairytale season ended with a thud.

They were no match for the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60.

They were outplayed, out-coached and picked the worst possible time to turn into a pumpkin.

But losing in the Super Bowl, getting blown out by the Seahawks, while disappointing, shouldn't diminish what the Patriots accomplished.

After spending a few years as bottom feeders, and losing relevance in NFL circles, Mike Vrabel's team prompted this refrain outside of New England with their remarkable turnaround: 'Not them again!'

And, looking past their improbable run, the future looks bright. That's the biggest takeaway.

With Vrabel and Drake Maye, and a a few other cornerstone pieces (Milton Williams, Christian Gonzalez) in-house, with more to be added, they’ll be a contending team for many years to come.

After the loss, the players were optimistic about the future. They insisted they’d be back. They should be a playoff team next year, even with a tougher schedule, but this game was proof they need more to win a championship.

“This is our first year here. No one thought we’d be here,” Carlton Davis III said. “We put the league on notice. Obviously, we didn’t get the job done. We have a bright future. We have a lot of great young players coming in and taking the league by storm in the first year ... I have a feeling we’ll be back.”

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2016

The news: The Patriots were beaten by the Broncos in the AFC Championship game, which was played in Denver, and which up until this season, was a playoff House of Horrors. The Peyton Manning-led Broncos then went on to win the Super Bowl.

One of the major storylines in the weeks following that loss was the reported return of Dante Scarnecchia, who retired, and ultimately rejoined the team. Dave DeGuglielmo had replaced the legend but was let go after two years. Scarnecchia, now in the Patriots Hall of Fame, always had the magic touch with offensive lines so that was good news.

The other major storyline? Deflategate fallout. In the coming months, Tom Brady would ultimately be forced to serve a four-game suspension at the start of the following season. That led to Brady's 'Scorched Earth' tour and improbable win over the Atlanta Falcons, coming back from a 28-3 deficit.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Why would Mike Vrabel say Will Campbell is his left tackle going forward after that performance in the Super Bowl? - Joe from Walpole

Guregian: First off, Campbell is a 2025 first round draft pick. Do you give up on him as a left tackle after just one season?

The Patriots need to see if they can develop him, work on his technique and iron out the technical issues that didn't help him during the playoffs.

All that said, I'm not convinced it's locked into stone.

If they find a legitimate left tackle via trade or the draft, and he beats out Campbell in training camp, that might be the impetus to slide Campbell over to guard.
