According to new research, 65% of pet parents would make budget cuts affecting their own lifestyle before disrupting their pets’. Unfortunately, it wasn’t always like this, and we’re not quite at 100%; however, revolutionaries like Katie Spies, the founder and CEO of Maev, have been changing the conversation for years, making dog owners take a second look at pet wellness.
Inspired by one pup named George, Katie’s brand Maev is the first human-grade, raw dog food brand formulated with science, and backed by vets. What started as a dog-walking sabbatical turned into a crash course in canine health, and eventually, a kitchen experiment-turned- booming business. Katie has redefined what it means to show up for our dogs—through nutrition, science, and a whole lot of love.
We sat down with Katie to talk about Maev’s origin story, her new campaign with soccer legends Christen Press and Tobin Heath, and why feeding your dog like family isn’t just a trend—it’s a movement.
Let’s rewind—how did your experience as a dog walker inspire the idea for Maev? Spending a year as a dog walker was my accidental degree in pet health. I had spent 10 months walking dogs, getting to know their people, their routines, needs, and hearing a lot about some very common issues: digestion, nutrition, allergies, sensitivities, and weight. So many of the dogs I met were facing similar issues to those I faced with George, and surprisingly often, I would meet people who found that homemade, real foods made a life-changing difference. The gap I kept seeing was dog parents wanting to feed their dogs real, high-quality food, but the options out there were either ultra-processed or time-consuming, messy, and really expensive.
Can you speak to what you were hearing from vets about food as well?
When George’s health issues escalated—seizures, fatigue, digestive problems—I tried nearly everything to help him feel better. As I dug deeper, I learned how often ultra-processed diets and nutritional deficiencies show up as real medical issues in dogs—just like they do in humans—and how much ingredient quality truly matters. That realization became the foundation for Maev, which I built alongside veterinary nutrition experts to make real, biologically appropriate food more accessible. Nutrition science is a big part of what makes Maev special.
Raw dog food can still feel niche to some. What do you wish more pet parents understood about it?
Most dog parents I meet would say that their dog is one of the most important parts of their life. That’s the whole reason Maev exists—not to tell people what to do, or to shame anyone for choices they make—but to make it easier to give your dog the absolute best nutrition you can.
If I could increase awareness of any single thing, it would be that the health benefits of feeding a high-quality, low-processed diet are real. People see them every day. At Maev, 91% of customers report seeing visible improvements in their dog’s health after switching.
I believe that most people would say that they’d do anything for their dog, and the hard part is knowing what to trust and what is actually worth doing.
