I hope the 2-hour delays helped everyone make it to school safely each day this week. Our teachers and students worked on classroom routines and expectations, including a lot of indoor recess, and it sounds like everyone adjusted back to school successfully.
I'd like to give a big thanks to our Custodial team and the FCPS Grounds Maintenance staff for working to get our schools ready for students. They cleared the parking lots, bus loop, entrances, and all the walkways. We are so grateful!
The snow days pushed back the end of the second grading period, so students will be bringing their Progress Reports home on Wednesday, February 11th.
Mrs. Jensen announced that the SCA has extended the following deadlines:
- Candygrams - Mon, Feb. 9th
- Food Drive Collection - Fri, Feb 13th
This weekend is going to be icy cold so please be careful when you walk outside! I can't wait for Super Bowl Sunday!
Sincerely,
Angela Thompson Principal

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Programs
Lottery Applications Are Open!
Student Registration for the 2026-2027 School Year is now open!
All rising kindergarten and first grade students who live in Fairfax County may enter a lottery to participate in Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. In DLI programs, students are learning elementary content in two languages with students spending half of the day learning in either language.
FCPS offers DLI programs in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Online lottery application opened on January 12, 2026. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school is required. FCPS does not provide transportation for students who live outside the attendance area of the DLI school. A one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).
Learn more about the DLI program at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/dual-language-immersion-programs-registration.
For registration questions, please contact Ms. Padua, Student Information Assistant, at jpadua@fcps.edu
Student Transfer Renewal Applications Open February 15
A student registered in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is expected to attend the school assigned to the student’s home address. The local or base school can be identified by the FCPS Boundary Locator.
However, an enrolling parent may request a student transfer for their child in grades kindergarten through 12 to attend a non-base school. Student transfers will be considered if the school capacity, grade-level capacity, and the school curricular program at the requested school will permit, as determined by FCPS.
- February 15 - April 1: renewal applications open
- March 1- June 1: initial/new applications open
Please visit https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/registration/student-transfer-information for more information about student transfers.
Meal Kits for Fasting Students
From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:
-
Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
-
Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
-
Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.
Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.
Help Keep Newington Forest Elementary Phone-Free!
Please remind your student that cell phones and personal devices (AirPods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell). Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool.
FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school. Visit FCPS’ cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions, including consequences for cell phone policy violations and exceptions for students with medical conditions or IEP/504 plans.
If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our front office at 703--923-2600.
