FCPS School Year Calendar
Good afternoon, Eagles,
What a crazy stretch it has been with the snow and ice. Who knew we would end up with a full-on snowcation followed by all these delayed openings? It was genuinely great to see students back in the building this week, and I even had a few tell me they were excited to be back. I think we are all ready to get back to a more normal routine next week.
I want to give a huge shout-out to our custodial staff. While we were home, they were hard at work making sure sidewalks and parking lots were clear and safe for our return. They truly were the superheroes of this storm, and we cannot thank them enough for everything they did.
Because of the weather, we did need to move International Night from this week to next week. We wanted to ensure our performers had sufficient practice time so the evening is as memorable as it deserves to be. I am really looking forward to seeing all of the performances on Thursday, 2/12.
Last Saturday, we participated in our first Unified Special Olympics basketball games at Chantilly High School. The team had a fantastic first outing, with a win over Hayfield and a close loss to Chantilly. I was incredibly proud of how our students played, and we also had a great cheering section supporting them. I am looking forward to seeing them compete again this weekend at Broad Run High School. A big thank you to our Coaches, Mr. Parham and Mr. Colley. Thank you to all our staff who have also supported the team!
Congratulations to our girls' gymnastics team, who finished third in the district on Tuesday night. They will compete next week at Lake Braddock on Tuesday night.
Today, our 11th-grade students presented their Global STEM Challenges projects. It is always impressive to see the real-world problems our students are working to solve. This year’s STEM cohort has been designing mobile service trucks powered by wind and solar energy. Students researched communities across the country to identify medical, educational, civic engagement, or entertainment needs that could be met through a mobile service. They also designed maquettes of their services, carefully considering equipment, resources, and energy needs across at least three different cities. They were excited to share how their understanding of derivatives, integrals, sinusoidal functions, rotational motion, and electrical power can be applied to serve communities in meaningful ways. I am incredibly proud of their work.
This Saturday, our academy will host an open house for families interested in learning more about the courses offered and whether they might be a good fit for their child. See below for more details.
Finally, this week was School Counselor Week. We are fortunate to have an outstanding counseling team that works tirelessly to support our students and families. They are currently deep into course registration for next year, but that is just one piece of what they do. From individual counseling and group support to advisory lessons and the college application process, they help students and families navigate all of life’s ups and downs. We truly appreciate everything they do.
I hope everyone has a restful weekend, and I look forward to a full and steady week ahead.
Have a good weekend,
Amanda Burke Principal

Parent/Guardian Permission for Student to Regularly Miss Instruction Time
As we approach Ramdan, we wanted to remind families about permission to miss instructional time. If your student is able to access the room during their normally occurring lunchtime, the form is not required.
Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to fostering a caring culture where each and every student can thrive in a learning environment where they feel welcome and a sense of belonging.
In alignment with FCPS Regulation 1502, Schools ensure that students and staff of all religious backgrounds have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection space within the school building.
FCPS supports students who need to take time during the school day to practice as their faith requires. If your student needs to be excused from a portion of at least one class to meditate and pray, please complete the form linked below. This means that your student would regularly miss instructional time. By doing so, your student will be responsible for all work that needs to be completed or made up.
School students can access our designated space during the instructional time with parent/guardian authorization. By completing this form, you are acknowledging that you understand your student may be missing daily instruction time.
