Kindness Week!

Hayfield Elementary School is joining the statewide celebration of Virginia Kindness Week! We are teaching students that kindness is a skill we build through practice. Look for a talking points text with questions you can ask your children to join the conversation at home. Ask during dinner, in the car, or before bed all week to keep the spirit of Kindness Week going!

Kindness Week

Monday, 2/9: Dream of Kindness
Wear your pajamas!

Tuesday, 2/10: Crazy for Kindness
Wear your silly or crazy socks!

Wednesday, 2/11: We love Kindness
Wear red, pink, purple, or hearts!

Thursday, 2/12: Hats off to Kindness
Wear your favorite hat!

Friday, 2/13: Hawks for Kindness
Wear your Hayfield Hawks gear!

Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16.

  • Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
  • Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and more information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.

Book Reading and Author Signing

Charlie the border collie

Charlie, our wonderful therapy dog here at Hayfield Elementary, has a published book about himself. On February 13th and March 6th, students in grades 1, 2, and 3 will have the opportunity to visit with Charlie and his mom, Peggy Gendive, the book’s author.  Peggy will be reading excerpts from the book. The title of the book is “Charlie, the Border Collie Without a Job” and it is written in English and Spanish.

The book is available for purchase at Amazon and at the Barnes & Noble store in Springfield. If you choose to purchase a copy, be sure to send the book to school with your child so that the author can sign it. All students in all grades will be able get their purchased book signed by the author.

Kindergarten Registration

Learn About Kindergarten at Hayfield Elementary

Our kindergarten open house is being held on Wednesday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. to give parents of students entering school in August an opportunity to learn more about kindergarten at our school.

We recognize that parents are their children’s first teachers. Resources on the School Readiness and Transition to Kindergarten webpage provide parents with ways to support their children to help ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten.

There’s also an easy-to-follow five-step process outlined for registering your child for kindergarten. Register your child today!  For more information, contact our Student Information Assistant, Jailene Acevedo, by phone at 703-924-4507 to set up an appointment.
