Principal's Message

Greetings Tiger Families!

Sunday marked the start of February, and the beginning of Black History Month. Black history, like the history of all members of our rich and vibrant community, is not separate from American history, but rather an essential facet of American history. This month is a time to highlight and initiate sustainable and meaningful opportunities for our students, and ourselves, to learn about the Black and African-American experiences and contributions.

One of my favorite quotes as an educator and student of history is from Frederick Douglass -  influential abolitionist, writer, orator, and statesman. He said “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Our goal every day at Twain is embody this sentiment by partnering with families to build strong, creative, collaborative, and empathetic young people ready to meet their goals and make the world a better place.

FCPS is hosting a Black History Month Celebration — Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence — on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., at Carter G. Woodson High School. The community is invited to attend this event and the details are on the poster below.

Meal Kits for Fasting Students During Ramadan

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16.

  • Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.

  • Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.

  • Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Matt Mough named Region 3’s Outstanding New Principal

Congratulations to Matt Mough on being selected as the Region 3 Outstanding New Principal for 2025-2026.  This selection means he is a finalist for the division-wide Outstanding New Principal Award this year.

This honor is an indication of Mr. Mough's accomplishments as a dedicated professional and the high esteem in which he is held by colleagues, students, and parents.

Mr. Mough's model of kindness, acceptance, and high expectations, as well as the shared vision for school improvement have made a tremendous impact on Mark Twain Middle School.  Families in the Twain community have benefitted from his dedication to the success of students in both their educational and social development.  He is truly an inspiration and assed to Twain MS and Fairfax County Public Schools.

The division-wide award will be presented at the FCPS Honors Gala on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.  The Twain MS community will be cheering on Mr. Mough to bring home the win!

Spring Track Information and Registration

Dear Families,

We’re excited to begin another Twain Middle School Track and Field season! This is a great opportunity for students to stay active, make friends, and represent Twain with pride.

To join the team, please complete all registration steps before the season starts:

Students will not be allowed to practice/compete until all three of these forms/tasks are completed and turned into the school. First practice is April 9th, with the first meet being April 25th

Practices will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30–3:35 p.m. Students who aren’t being picked up at 3:35 should stay for a second-block after school activity until the late buses arrive at 4:45 p.m. Practices may be canceled for unexpected weather, school closures, or staff meetings, with updates shared via email. 

Meets take place on Saturdays, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with transportation provided to and from Twain. If a student has a scheduling conflict, we can work something out as needed. 

Events include: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, Shot Put, Long Jump, and 4x400m relay. 

For safety reasons, athletes must wear appropriate athletic clothing and shoes as well as stay properly nourished and hydrated to participate.

All communication will come via email, so please read messages carefully for important updates and deadlines.

  • April 25: Meet #1 @ Herndon HS
  • May 2: Meet #2 @ West Springfield HS
  • May 5: Registration Closes (no late additions)
  • May 9: Meet #3 @ West Potomac HS
  • May 16: Meet #4 @ Oakton HS
  • May 30: Championship Meet @ Robinson HS
  • June 5 or 12: End-of-Season Banquet (tentative)

Moving?

If you are moving, please update your address with us as soon as you’ve moved. If you are moving during the current school year and your student’s last day will be prior to May 22, you can find the withdrawal process on the Registrar’s Corner page of the Twain Website. If you are moving and your student’s last day will be May 22 or later, please follow the process below to submit the Student Intentions for Next School Year form.

Student Enrollment SY 26-27:

  • For students returning to Twain, any forms which need updating will be indicated in future correspondence leading up to Tiger Fest in August.
  • If your rising 7th or rising 8th grader will NOT attend Twain next school year, or your rising 9th grader will not be attending FCPS for high school, please complete the Student Intentions for Next School Year form and submit it to Christina Spencer cmspencer@fcps.edu as soon as possible.
    • If transferring to a non-public (private) school, please indicate the location and whether it is religiously or non-religiously affiliated.
    • If transferring to a DODEA/American school outside of the US, select the option for “Public School Division in the US”
    • If attending a non-DEDEA school in another country, select “I do not intend to enroll in any public or nonpublic school next year” and name the school/country in “Other”.

Obtaining Student Records for School Transfer:

Should you indicate that your child(ren) will NOT attend Twain/FCPS for the 2026-2027 school year, the submitted form serves as your official withdrawal notice and no further action will be required. If their last day in attendance will be prior to the last day of school, June 17, you must still communicate their attendance.

Once you have registered your child(ren) at another school:

  • Rising 7th and 8th Graders: The new school should be advised by you to send an official request for student records to your child’s previous school. For rising 8th grade students, that’s Christina Spencer cmspencer@fcps.edu at Twain. Rising 7th - If you notified the elementary school prior to the end of the school year that your child would not go to Twain, the new school should be referred to the elementary school where your child’s file will remain. 
  • Rising 9th Graders: If you notified us prior to June 17 that your child will not attend FCPS for 9th grade, the new school should be advised by you to send an official request for student records to Christina Spencer cmspencer@fcps.edu. If you did not notify us prior to June 17, they should be referred to contact the high school where your student would have attended if they remained in FCPS.

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Applications are now open; Due Friday, Feb 27

Hello Parents & Students!

Applications for National Junior Honor Society are now open and available in the All-School Schoology Course. Only students can access the application and fill it out, but please help your student if they need help filling out the application. Applications will be due on Fri. Feb. 27th.

We held an online interest meeting on Fri. Jan. 30th. Below are links to the recording of that meeting and the slides presented. We hope that this can help you get the answers that you need.

In the application it does ask students if they have completed service. If your student is unsure about service performed here are some ideas: Service given through 

  • Scouts
  • a Church Youth Group
  • helping a Teacher
  • helping in the School Library
  • after school club
  • giving help in the community, etc.
