Our January favorites

We’re just a month into the year, and Wirecutter journalists have already crowned our new favorite sponges, waxed poetic about a perfect pair of socks, and tried on more than a hundred trousers and slacks to answer the age-old question: What pants do I wear to work?

And we, your newsletters editors, added a few things to our carts along the way, per usual. Here’s what made the biggest difference in our own lives last month. Happy February.

I went on a bit of a new-year, less-plastic kick and ordered myself a new water bottle — it’s the only glass option our experts found with a metal-lined cap, meaning no plastic at all touches my water. The protective silicone sleeve comes in some lovely, not-at-all-garish colors, and I love how easily the 12-ounce size fits into my work bag for easy commuting.

Despite my colleague Rose Maura Lorre insisting it would, I was still shocked at the difference this $10 sink strainer instantly made in my life. The holes are perfectly sized, so water easily streams through, yet it catches all the gunk that might otherwise cause a clog. And emptying it, usually the grossest part, is blessedly quite easy, thanks to the flexible basket that pops inside out.

My extremely robust spice collection once consumed an entire cabinet in my tiny kitchen. Now I’m a new woman (with far more space for tinned fish), courtesy of these three-tier racks. I appreciate how easily they contract and expand to accommodate the range of my mismatched cabinet sizes, and that they are wide enough to fit oddly shaped spice containers.

Pimple patches single-handedly cured me of my pimple-picking habit (gross, I know, sorry). Lately, I’ve been using one of our beauty experts’ faves, these incredibly effective ones. What I love most about them is that they’re practically invisible, to the point where I barely notice them on my skin as I go about my day. And when I peel them off, my whiteheads are noticeably gone and pimples subdued.
