Dear Travel Fan,

It’s been below freezing for a while here in the Northeast, and while I am generally an “embrace the cold” traveler, I understand the opposite impulse. So if you’re looking for suggestions on how to escape winter, we’ve got plenty: Our 36 Hours column visits Vieques, the Puerto Rican island with a wild, no-frills charm. We’ve also put together a quiz to help you identify the best destination in Mexico for your next vacation. And if you’re a space fan, we’ve got advice on how to visit Florida’s Space Coast for the coming Artemis II launch.

If you’d rather revel in the chilly temperatures, how about trying ice climbing in Wyoming? Elaine Glusac did.

Or maybe you just want to check into a luxurious new city hotel for the weekend. If you want to bring your pet along, we’ve got tips on how to make sure it’s a vacation for both of you.

Southwest Airlines got rid of one of its signature quirks this week, moving to assigned seating from its open seating process. We were there for some of the first flights.

Finally, in recent days hotels have emerged as a front line in the conflict over President Trump’s immigration crackdown. In Minneapolis and elsewhere, activists have organized protests against hotels where ICE agents are thought to be staying, making noise outside, encouraging boycotts and booking up rooms only to cancel them at the last minute. The protests have particularly targeted budget hotels affiliated with chains like Hilton and Marriott, whose owners are typically franchisees and, often, immigrants themselves. We take a look at what’s going on.

Additionally, if you work at, or own, a hotel, we would love to hear from you about how the immigration crackdown and the protests have affected you. Tell us about your experience and we may be in contact for a follow-up article.

Wishing you safe and happy travels,
Amy Virshup
