Joyce Diebel passed peacefully from this life in her home on Tuesday, January 27th, at the age of 100. Joyce was born in Chicago. After graduating from Lindbloom H.S., she went to work, including as the executive secretary to the Treasurer of Ryerson Steel and attended Northwestern University at night. In 1957, she married Johnny C. Diebel, a native of Texas, at Hope Lutheran Church in Chicago. In 1961, they purchased a home in Des Plaines. After all three children were in school, Joyce began a career in journalism with the Des Plaines Suburban Times. At age 54, she returned to college and graduated from DePaul University. She was promoted to Editor of the Times, and at 61, became the Managing Editor of the Des Plaines Publishing Co.'s six suburban and two Chicago weekly newspapers - the first and only woman to hold
that position in the company's 100 year history. Joyce was very involved in the local community, serving on the boards of the United Way, the Des Plaines Historical Society, Trinity Lutheran Church's Council, and as president of Trinity's WELCA organization and Waycinden Women's Club. Although she enjoyed her career and community involvement, her greatest happiness came from her beloved family. Her husband, Johnny, preceded her in death in 2009. She is survived by her three children, Joy Lambert (Hal), Paul Diebel (Shannon), and John Diebel (Tanya); five grandchildren, Chelsea, Mark, Ryan, Becky, and Scott; and six great grandchildren, Gregory, Amelia, Nicholas, Amelia, Lincoln, and Molly. The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 7th, at 11AM, at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Road in Mt. Prospect. Light
lunch to follow. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 E. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016.
