Kicking off

Super Bowl or bust.

In September, applying that popular saying to the Patriots would have been considered laughable.

They were a four-win team in 2024, welcomed a new coach and coaching staff, an overhauled roster, and a date in the championship game was the farthest thing from anyone's one.

Only now, after finishing first in the AFC East with a 14-3 record, winning two playoff games (Chargers, Texans), and having their AFC Championship opponent Denver lose it's starting quarterback, Bo Nix, changes the narrative.

Losing to Jarett Stidham with a Super Bowl berth on the line would be tough to swallow.

It wouldn't diminish what the Patriots accomplished this season. But it would feel like a missed opportunity, one that doesn't come around very often.

MassLive sports columnist Karen Guregian makes the postseason pick:

The Patriots have loved being underdogs. They've enjoyed having doubters.

They've made a habit of proving people wrong.

On Sunday, in the AFC Championship game, they won't have that luxury since they're playing a Denver team that lost its starting quarterback.

They're the overwhelming favorite to beat the Broncos, and punch their ticket to the Super Bowl.

Now the pressure's on them. They're expected to win. How will they handle it?

By taking care of business and beating the Broncos.

It won't be as easy as some think. Playing in Denver, playing in the altitude, playing with all the crowd noise, is still a tough assignment. And, scoring against the Broncos defense hasn't all of a sudden become a piece of cake.

Jarrett Stidham, who is starting for injured starter Bo Nix (broken ankle), hasn't thrown a pass in a regular season game in two years. That's problematic. No doubt Sean Payton will devise a plan that gives Stidham the best chance to survive.

In the end, however, Drake Maye and the Patriots will find a way to prevail. They've been road warriors all year. It'll be no different at Mile High.

Final score prediction: Patriots 24, Broncos 20

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Who do you like to win on the NFC side, the LA Rams or Seattle Seahawks? - Scott from NH

Guregian: The Seattle Seahawks defense is scary good.

Sam Darnold?

He's just scary. He's like a ticking time bomb. Everyone keeps waiting for him to explode. He hasn't so far. He's played well. But that doesn't mean he doesn't make me - and everyone else - nervous.

So I'd go with the LA Rams. Sean McVay brings a wealth of experience. Ditto Matthew Stafford. Darnold has to crack at some point. That's his history.
