The Eye on Foxborough Newsletter

Kicking off

The Patriots opened the postseason with a 16-3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers to advance to their upcoming AFC Divisional Round matchup with the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon (3 p.m).

The Chargers win was eye-opening on several fronts.

First, it was validation of their 14-3 regular season. They benefitted with a soft schedule, there's no argument against that. But some wanted to diminish the Patriots and their legitimacy as a contender because of it.

Easy schedule or not, the Patriots are a good team.

Beating the 11-6 Chargers, with Justin Herbert, and a highly-ranked Bolts defense, drove that narrative home and put a sock into the notion the Patriots were more a product of their schedule.

The Patriots are legitimate. They're a very good football team that is two wins away from a date in San Francisco for the Super Bowl.

Second, the performance of the defense, their domination (six sacks) of  Herbert and the Chargers offense, put everyone on notice that the Patriots can win games with more than just Drake Maye and the offense.

The Texans, with their ferocious defense, pose another great challenge. They come to Foxborough riding a 10-game win streak. Will the Patriots magical ride continue?

At this point, it's tough to bet against them.

MassLive sports columnist Karen Guregian makes the postseason pick:

The star of the Houston Texans is their defense. During the regular season, due in large part to that defense, the Texans took down Patrick Mahomes (14 of 33 for 160 yards, 3 INTs, 2 sacks, 19.8 QB rating) and the Chiefs 20-10, Josh Allen (2 INTs, 8 sacks) and the Bills 23-19, and Justin Herbert (1 INT, 5 sacks) and the Chargers 20-16.

Impressive, to stay the least. That unit is the heartbeat of the Texans, who have won 10 straight games.

With that, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Texans, who have won 10 straight games, came to Foxborough and beat the Patriots in their AFC Divisional Round game.

I'm just not convinced it's going to happen.

The Patriots are a more well-rounded team. And if there's anyone that can crack that defense, it's Josh McDaniels and Drake Maye.

Plus, when it comes down to the most important player on the field - the quarterback - the Patriots have the clear advantage. I'll take Drake Maye over a shaky C.J. Stroud.

Beyond that, this is more gut feeling than anything else. The Patriots are home, they're well-coached, they're connected, they have the better quarterback, and believe they can beat anyone.

They'll find a way.

Final score prediction: Patriots 17, Texans 13

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

If the Patriots advance, who would you rather play in the AFC Championship game, Denver or Buffalo? - Al from Woburn

Guregian: That's definitely one of those pick your poison propositions. Playing the Broncos in the altitude at Mile High, or a Bills team with a possessed Josh Allen coming to Gillette Stadium.

With Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson out of the picture, Allen and the Bills know this is their best chance to finally make it to the Super Bowl, and cash in.

After what Allen and the Bills did to the Patriots in the second half of their most recent game, coming back from a 21-0 deficit Week 15, that's the poison I'd more want to avoid.

The Patriots travelled well during the season. They were unbeaten (8-0) on the road. Beating Sean Payton, and the Broncos defense at Mile High is no easy task, but it's preferable to dealing with Allen one win away from the Super Bowl.
