TOP OF THE AGENDA | White House says Nato troops deployment has no 'impact' |
|
| | French President Emmanuel Macron said the initial contingent would be reinforced soon. Credit: Reuters | Several European states and members of the Nato alliance, including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands and the UK, are taking part in a limited military deployment to Greenland. The deployment consists of only a few dozen personnel as part of Danish-led joint exercises called Operation Arctic Endurance. While heavy in symbolism, Paul Kirby notes, it was not immediately clear how long they would stay. The mission come as US President Donald Trump continues to press his claim to the Arctic island, a semi-autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she did not think the deployment would "impact [Trump's] goal of the acquisition of Greenland at all." |

| | | Rescuers were still pulling bodies out of the mangled train when I arrived at the scene. Parts of [the carriage] were completely crushed. "There was an elderly woman hanging upside down [from a carriage]... Another woman, whose right arm appeared to be broken, was holding onto her," said Pitchaya, 32, who is trained in basic first aid and was able to attend to some of those wounded.
Emergency responders used cranes and hydraulic cutting tools to free passengers trapped in the wreckage. "People were screaming 'Help! Help!' and smoke was starting to rise," said restaurant owner Penporn Pumjantuek, who works about 100m (328ft) from the scene. "Oil from the train was spilling everywhere." |
