Tess Bridgeman is who we needed to hear from today. For those of you with lingering questions about what Trump did in Venezuela and the future risks it creates, Tess has answers. I teach my students that to understand the law, you have to start with the statute. Tess and I did exactly that in our conversation, starting with the War Powers Act, discussing the Trump administration’s compliance with its reporting rules, how it compares with other administrations, and evaluating what is happening between the U.S. and Venezuela against both international and U.S. law benchmarks. While you more than likely know what conclusions we reached—that what the administration did was illegal—it’s important to understand how we got there and where the pressure points Congress could use to tamp down on Trump’s ability to continue in this dangerous vein are located, now that it’s showing some small signs of willingness. Our job as citizens is becoming more difficult and more exacting. But it has also never been more important. Trump backs down in the face of public pressure. With possible action in Greenland, Colombia, Cuba, and Iran looming, we all have a duty to stay informed and active.
