The High Stakes of Sunday’s Golden Globes |
For filmmakers, talent, publicists, executives, and anyone else involved in the awards race, there’s no easy, gentle return to work after the holidays. They hit the ground running with the Palm Springs gala and the Critics Choice Awards just days after New Year’s. This week alone includes the Actor Award nominations, the AFI luncheon, and the Golden Globes.
The Globes on Sunday are going to mark a key moment for many Oscar hopefuls, as discussed on this week’s episode of Little Gold Men. Because the Globes divide their acting categories into drama and musical-comedy, there’s an opportunity for several actors to win and give acceptance speeches just ahead of Oscar voting. A memorable speech can shift the tides of the season, as it did for I’m Still Here star Fernanda Torres last year when she won best actress in a drama. Torres went on to nab a history-making Oscar nomination.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the actor-in-a-drama race, in which Michael B. Jordan is up against Wagner Moura and Joel Edgerton. The Sinners star is a lock for an Oscar nomination at this point, but a win here could give him a key spotlight moment as he heads into the Oscar race against Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Those two Oscar front-runners are competing in the musical-or-comedy category, which is one of the tightest races of the season.
On this week’s Little Gold Men episode, we also look at how the Critics Choice Awards helped Chalamet with his first big win over DiCaprio. Read on below for more about how this tight lead-actor race is shaping up. |
