It’s been really really cold where I live, so I thought it was time to share my New Yorker puffy coat drawing. A few thing happened in this past week that are worth paying attention to. Trump is ending his attempt to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, following a loss at the Supreme Court last week. He stll has troops in Washigton, DC and New Orleans and has not said anything about their status. Over the holidays the Republicans released the transcript of Jack Smith’s Congressional testimony, probably hoping it wouldn’t get noticed with people taking a holiday break from the news. I did not read the transcript. Today I noticed that mainstream media, although initially reporting on it, have seemingly dropped the story. Politico does have a wrap up, which provides some takeaways. Smith was unequivocal about Trump’s guilt. The former special counsel repeatedly leaned into the defense of his probe and expressed confidence that a jury would have convicted Trump if the case went to trial. When asked by both Republicans and Democrats whether his investigations were politically motivated, “Each time Smith was unequivocal: Not for a moment.” And when asked if he thought Trump would come after him, Smith said, “I have no doubt that the president wants to seek retribution against me.” My heart goes out to the families of the mostly young people who lost their lives in the club fire in Switzerland. So very sad. Why does it feel like tragedy is so much worse when it happens to people who were, moments before, so happy? I hope you’re having a nice Friday, and that your weekend will be a good one. Below, I share another installment of Deeper Seeing, something for paid subscribers. It’s an occasional feature of thoughts, drawings or photographs that go a little deeper into something. Today I found myself writing about a small aspect of Mamdani’s inauguration, and something the press does that annoys me!... Continue reading this post for free in the Substack app |
