A weekly film and box office newsletter. Howdy, folks! I hope your holiday season is going well so far — it's been a great one for the box office all around, so clearly lots of folks are going to the movies. "Avatar: Fire and Ash" unsurprisingly won the Christmas box office with $88 million domestic over the four-day holiday weekend, topping $760 million worldwide. That marks a minimal 25% drop from its opening weekend and signals healthy legs for James Cameron's second "Avatar" sequel. The filmmaker has said we won't know until mid-January if "Fire and Ash" makes enough money to warrant further sequels — "Avatar 3" cost around $400 million to make, not including the worldwide marketing campaign — but this second weekend is a positive sign. But the holiday box office was healthy from tip to tail. Buoyed by a marketing campaign that saw Timothée Chalamet find unique ways to get the word out, "Marty Supreme" scored the second-highest opening weekend in A24 history and $27.1 million over the four-day frame. Rapturous reviews, awards buzz and positive notices for Chalamet's performance (he's electric in this thing) should propel further success for the most expensive film in A24 history, as Josh Safdie's 1950s-set sports drama cost $70 million to make. And "Zootopia 2" continues to do gangbusters, raking in another $20 million over Christmas to bring its domestic total to $321 million and worldwide gross to a stunning $1.4 billion. Sony's comedy "Anaconda" ($23.6 million over four days) and Lionsgate's "The Housemaid" ($18.9 million over four days) also performed well. People are going to the movies! We love to see it.
