Cubbie News

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

As we head into winter break, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible energy that has filled our halls this month. It has been a joy to see our community come together to celebrate our students' growth and shared school spirit.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our PTA Book Fair and PTA Family Game Night! Seeing so many of our families browsing for books and engaging in some friendly competition over board games was the perfect way to head into the holidays. These events are special, and we truly appreciate the PTA and our volunteers for making them such a success. We are also grateful for all of the donations for the winter cheer for our staff. Thank you to everyone who donated!

Whether you are traveling to see loved ones or enjoying time at home, we wish you a restful, safe, and wonderful winter break. This is a well-deserved time for our students to recharge their batteries and spend quality time with family.

Our main office and school will be closed for all students from Monday, December 22 through Friday, January 2. Our community messages will resume on January 7. We are so proud of the progress our Cubbies have made in 2025 and we look forward to seeing all of our students back on Monday, January 5, 2026 ready to dive into a brand-new year of learning and discovery!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller, Principal

Nausheen Haider, Assistant Principal

Winter Break Literacy Adventures

Engaging in literacy activities over winter break helps students maintain the reading, writing, and speaking skills they built during the first half of the school year. Even a little daily practice, such as these 10 fun family activities, helps ensure they return to school confident and ready to continue growing in literacy. Enjoy these literacy adventures as a family!

Principals Walking Club - January 9

Friday, January 9 will be our next Principals Walking Club from 8:05-8:30am! Students are invited to join Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Haider, and other staff members in the gym for a morning walk to start the day off strong!

Positivity Project

This week, our school is focusing on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.

To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!

Winter Resources for Families

A list of resources has been compiled for students and families in case they or someone they know needs assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources page for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Even If School Is Closed, Learning Can Continue!

We encourage students to take advantage of fun learning opportunities during the upcoming winter break and on snow days. Consider these winter activities to blend education and play at home.

Reminders

Attendance

Reporting Student Absences

We are committed to partnering with families to promote positive attendance habits. Whenever your child is unable to attend school, please let us know. Reporting absences helps our staff support students and connect them with resources they may need.

Full-day absences can be reported in SIS ParentVUE. Parents can also report absences by either method below:

Cub Run Attendance Phone Line: 703-633-7575

Cub Run Attendance mailbox: CubRunElem.Attendance@fcps.edu

Parents may monitor their child’s attendance records in SIS ParentVUE.

Attendance Codes in SIS ParentVUE Explained

Attendance codes in SIS ParentVUE are assigned by school staff to better identify the reasons behind student absences. This allows us to respond thoughtfully and provide appropriate support. Visit the FCPS Attendance Policy webpage to learn more about the codes.

When Your Child Is Sick

It is also important to keep your child home when they are sick. The Can My Child Go to School? webpage provides helpful recommendations on when to keep your child home.

For instance, a child should attend school if they have cold symptoms, as long as they are feeling like they can participate in school activities. However, if they have severe, uncontrolled, or rapid coughing; wheezing; or difficulty breathing, definitely keep them home and contact your health care provider.
