Sounds of the Season
Last week, our 5th and 6th grade Chorus performed their Winter Concerts for students, staff, and families and friends. They were filled with songs that celebrate winter. Our young vocalists did a great job, under the leadership of music teachers Ms. McCormick and Mr. Crouch. This Thursday, 6th grade Band and Strings students (plus some 5th grade Strings students) will present their Winter Concert at 6:30 p.m. All families are welcome!

Holiday Sweater Extravaganza!
The seasonal celebration continued today with the first day of our SCA Spirit Week — Ugly Sweater vs. Holiday Sweater Day! No matter what they looked like, those colorful sweaters brightened our hallways and classrooms across the building. See the article below for details on the spirit themes for the rest of the week.

Putting Their Bridges to the Test
In art class, 6th graders put their wooden-stick bridge designs to the test by seeing how many big textbooks their constructions could hold. Several reached a record of 12!

News & Notes
REMINDER! Full-Time Advanced Academics Referrals due Tonight by 11:59 p.m.!
Parents and guardians of students in grades 2 through 7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services must submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Lane’s Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART) Linda Simon by TONIGHT — Monday, December 15 — at 11:59 p.m.
If you have not done so already, please email Ms. Simon at lesimon@fcps.edu to let her know you plan to submit a referral so she expects it. Also, please keep in mind that “travel” through cyberspace isn’t always instantaneous, so don’t cut it too close. Emails sent after 4 p.m. on December 15 will be acknowledged as soon as possible on the 16th.
Note: This deadline applies to all grade levels, including 6th graders screening for 7th grade even though middle school course selection does not take place until January/February 2026. If you want to have your child screened for services in middle school, please be sure to submit the referral by the December 15 deadline.
Once a referral is received, our school will compile information related to the student. Then, a committee of six trained professionals from across the county will review materials to determine eligibility for full-time AAP services.
Next Steps for Parents
Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of their child’s materials after February 20, 2026, by emailing Ms. Simon at the address above.
At the elementary level, referrals for subject-specific and part-time AAP are screened by the school. If you miss the full-time referral deadline, your student can still be screened for subject-specific or part-time AAP services for the remainder of the year.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs webpage.
Join Us for the Band and Strings Concert This Thursday!
Last Thursday, we were treated to the musical talents of the 5th and 6th grade Choruses. This Thursday, December 18, it’s our young instrumentalists’ chance to shine as they share some holiday tunes at the Band and Strings Winter Concert. The concert, featuring our 6th grade musicians and some selected 5th graders as well, will begin at 6:30 p.m. All families are welcome!

Next Early Release Wednesday Is December 17; Please Notify the School of Changes to Your Plans
Our next Early Release Wednesday will be THIS WEDNESDAY, December 17. Students will be released three hours early that day at 1:05 p.m. We will once again offer supervised activities after school for those families with child-care hardship because of this new Early Release scheduling. This option is designed to be for students who have no other option.
To plan for our after-school groups this month, we will follow parent responses provided for the Early Release last month. If you need to change your child’s plans from last month, please call the school office at 703-924-7700 as soon as possible. You may also reach out via email to our family liaison Melanie Crosby Hardy at macrosby@fcps.edu.
If we do not hear from you, we will send your child home as previously directed.

Winter Break Is Next Week!
Winter Break is nearly upon us! Please note that school and the office will be CLOSED Monday, December 22, through Friday, January 2. The last day before the break – Friday, December 19 – will be a regular full day of school, with dismissal at 4:05 p.m. as usual.
We understand that there are many events happening at this time of year. Please remember that if you have to pick your child up early for any reason it’s important to send an email to your child’s teacher that morning and an email to our attendance email address, laneelem.attendance@fcps.edu. This helps ensure that your child will be ready to leave the classroom when you arrive at school to pick him or her up and alerts the office. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
School will reopen on Monday, January 5, at the regular time. Please make sure you have these dates on your calendar.
Pre-Winter Break SCA Spirit Days Start Seasonal Fun
The SCA has scheduled a fun set of spirit days this week to help us get into a celebratory mood for Winter Break. We kicked off the fun today with “Ugly Sweater vs Holiday Sweater Day.” Here’s a list of themes for the remaining days this week:
-
Tuesday, 12/16 – Red vs. White Day or just Candy Cane Day
-
Wednesday, 12/17 – White Out vs. Black Out Day
-
Thursday, 12/18 – The Grinch vs. Santa Day
-
Friday, 12/19 – Pajama Day!
We hope your child will get into the spirit and participate!

Looking for the Perfect Holiday Treat for Your Child’s Teacher or Other Lane Staff?
If you’d like to give your child’s teacher or another staff member a token of appreciation during this holiday season but aren’t sure where to start, we can help! Thanks to the PTA, we’ve collected “Teacher Favorites” lists to guide you! You can find the lists, organized by teacher, on our school website.
Please note that gifts are completely optional. And remember … sometimes the best gifts are the simplest – a homemade card, a letter of thanks, a special treat your child helped to bake, or even a heart-felt “Happy Holidays!” wish.
Winter Break Holidays
There several cultural holidays coming up in the next few weeks. We wish very happy holidays to all who celebrate this time of year!
A very Merry Christmas to those in our community who celebrate! Christmas is an annual holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the person who stands at the heart of the Christian tradition. It is celebrated in many unique ways across the U.S. and the world on December 25, most commonly by the joyous giving of gifts. Learn more about Christmas here.

Chanukah, an eight-day Festival of Lights, is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of a small quantity of oil that lit the Temple’s menorah for eight days. Chanukah began at sundown yesterday and will run through the 22nd. See the complete school year calendar.
|
In addition, we would like to wish a belated Happy Bodhi Day to those in our community who celebrate! Bodhi Day is a Buddhist holiday that recognizes the day that Buddha achieved enlightenment through meditation under the Bodhi tree. We apologize for the delay in recognizing this important cultural holiday.

“Walk in My Shoes” Coming January 15! Volunteers Needed!
As part of our ongoing commitment to inclusion and raising awareness about disabilities, Lane will host “Walk in My Shoes” during P.E. classes on Thursday, January 15. The purpose of this event is to give general-education students a broader understanding of the daily situations faced by some of their friends with developmental challenges and learning differences. The program fosters empathy for others and gets students thinking about how they might be able to help a friend.
“Walk in My Shoes” requires a lot of adult support to be successful. We are looking for volunteers to assist with many different activities. Help is needed during these times:
- 9:20 – 11:45 a.m. (3rd through 6th grade students participating)
- 12:30 – 2:55 p.m. (kindergarten through 2nd grade)
Each volunteer will receive a script and information regarding their activity and the challenge being explored. Visit our “Walk in My Shoes” Sign-Up Genius to sign up. Thank you!
Save the Date for the 2026 Lane Spelling Bee – Thursday, February 12!
The Spelling Bee buzz has begun! If your child might be interested in participating this year, please mark Thursday, February 12, on your calendar. The bee is open to all students in grades 1 through 6 and is completely optional. Practice sessions will be held before school for several weeks prior to the bee, which will be held after school.
Registration packets with permission forms were sent home in last week’s Wednesday Folders. If your child is interested in participating in the bee, please fill out, sign, and return the permission form as soon as possible and no later than Friday, January 16. For more details, watch this video from Mrs. Chozick.

Want a Quick Way to Recognize a Lane ES Employee or Team? Share an FCPS CARES!
The FCPS CARES Program allows parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees who go above and beyond to help others and show they care about their students, colleagues, and the community. We invite you to submit a story to acknowledge the great work of an employee or group of employees who should receive FCPS CARES recognition.
Please take note of the following before submitting an FCPS CARES:
- Submissions are entered through StaffConnect, the HR portal for all employee actions. Select “I want to submit a(n)” and scroll to “FCPS Cares Submission.”
- The report will use the word “incident,” which is a generic term for all submissions, regardless of type.
- A notification email, with the submission text included, will be sent to the recipient(s) and copied to the recipient's supervisor(s).
- All submissions will be posted to our FCPS CARES webpage and shared via other FCPS news outlets. The FCPS CARES of the Month recipients are posted at the top of each month's page.
- Each quarter, the Educate Fairfax Board selects a recipient from the past 2-3 FCPS CARES of the Month recognitions. The recipient will be recognized as the FCPS CARES of the Quarter. A surprise visit from Dr. Reid, accompanied by a sponsor check and a special certificate, takes place at the employee’s worksite.
Our staff would love to hear how their hard work has made a difference to you! Thank you for your consideration!
