The Eye on Foxborough Newsletter

Kicking off

The Patriots are back from the bye week with one simple mission: Beat Buffalo.

Doing so will allow the Patriots to clinch the AFC East division title for the first time since 2019 and punch their ticket into the playoffs.

Along with the Patriots taking down the Bills in Buffalo Week 5, Mike Vrabel's team needs to double their pleasure in Foxborough on Sunday.

"We're playing for a championship this week," Vrabel said during his weekly appearance on WEEI. "Each week, you have a new opportunity, a new message. And this is a championship week for us, an opportunity to win the AFC East - something that this team hasn't done in five years, or that Buffalo has done five years in a row.

"To do that, you have to go out and play a certain way, and you have to do things to continue to improve ... understand that this is a great opportunity for us this week here at home."

Even though the Patriots have beaten teams with winning records (Bills, Buccaneers, Panthers), and have ripped off 10 straight wins, there is still some hesitation to embrace them as a legitimate contender.

The actually opened as underdogs in Sunday's matchup.

"Good," Stefon Diggs said with a smile, adding that it gives the team an "edge" and "something to prove."

It fuels the motto the Patriots have adopted in: "Nobody believes in us, but us."

Beyond that, the best way to stifle critics is to take the Bills down a second time, and make another statement - one that's critique-proof.

MassLive sports columnist Matt Vautour returns for Week 15 to make the pick:

I think the Bills are going to win.

I think the Patriots can win. And given my prediction history, there’s a good chance my Bills pick will be wrong. But my gut says Buffalo. For anyone monitoring the No. 1 seed race, my gut also says the Broncos will lose to the Packers.

This Patriots team has never been in a game like this. They’re playing a good team with a lot on the line that is familiar with what has made New England successful.

Whether they win or lose, I think playing this game will be really valuable for the Patriots as a preparation point for the playoffs. The teams they’ll face in January are going to be a lot more like the Bills than most of the bowling pins they’ve faced up until now. It could be the second of three meetings between New England and Buffalo, which adds to the intrigue.

I want to see how the Patriots handle Josh Allen, especially on third down. I want to see what New England’s inconsistent rushing attack can get going against Buffalo’s mediocre run defense.

And I want to see what happens if the game is close in the final five minutes. How do the Patriots manage the clock? How does Drake Maye rise to the moment? Can Andy Borregales make a big kick in a big spot on a cold night?

Mostly, I’m pretty excited to watch the biggest game the Patriots have played in a while.

Final score: Bills 31-28

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Are you surprised that Kansas City, Baltimore and Cincinnati aren't going to be in the playoffs? -  Jeremy from Malden

Guregian: In preseason predictions, I had all three as playoff teams. Given the quarterbacks involved (Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow) it's stunning, actually.

But, put into context, Burrow is just back after missing most of the season (toe surgery). Jackson has been battling an ankle injury, and hasn't looked the same. He's much less dynamic. As for Mahomes, it's been odd not seeing him pull KC through. They've lost a ton of one-score games, games they would win in the past.

He hasn't had an effective run game, and his favorite receiver, Travis Kelce, is showing his age. Still, Mahomes' wizardry hasn't delivered.
