Last Chance to Weigh in on Arlington's Transportation Future

If you've ever thought to yourself "This could be different" or "This should be better" or "I love this, we need more," then now is your chance to tell us what should be different or better or more.

Now is Your Chance

Tell Arlington County your thoughts about our draft policies that will guide transportation planning for the next early future; give us your priorities for what ways of getting around are important to you so they're not neglected; tell us if you want more curbside parking, better delivery drop-off space, or another use at the curb.

Don’t miss your chance to help plan for the future of transportation in Arlington! The last day to share your feedback is December 7. Learn more about how to get involved at arlingtonva.us/TransportationFuture.

Ramp Closures at Rt. 27 & Columbia Pike for Federal Project

Beginning in the next few weeks, the on and off ramps between Washington Boulevard/Route 27 and Columbia Pike will be closed, in service of the Arlington National Cemetery Southern Expansion project.

Additional details will be shared as the exact closure date is confirmed.

The Defense Access Road/Southern Expansion Project is a complex and large-scale project, which will occasionally result in site conditions requiring construction plans to change. Check the ANC page for additional updates.

Tree Planting on Columbia Pike

Columbia Pike - Landscaping

For the next few weeks, landscapers will be working on Columbia Pike between South Garfield Street and South Oakland Street to rebuild soil, remove dead trees, and install new trees.

Crews will be in the roadway temporarily to access curbs and medians, but there will be room to get around them.

From the Mail Bag: What Does "Substantial Completion" Mean?

Question: I keep hearing that Columbia Pike road work will reach substantial completion at the end of 2025 and that smaller tasks will be done in early 2026. But what does that even mean?

Answer: All lanes and sidewalks will be open by the end of this year!

As of mid November, all lanes on Columbia Pike have received final paving and street markings. Most sidewalk areas are open on Segment, like in front of Columbia Pike Cinema and Drafthouse, the shopping center at Arlington Village, and Sabores.

The spots where sidewalk reconstruction is still in progress, like between South Scott Street and South Orme Street, are expected to be done in this year also.

There's still work to do though, right?

Yes. While travel lanes and sidewalks are open, crews are still working on installing and connecting new signals and other small tasks, but the big traffic disruptions and excavations will be totally over at the end of the year.

In early 2026, there will still be "punch list" items to do - that's construction speak for small tasks that need to be finished or corrected before the project is totally complete.

Landscapers will be in the roadway to prepare for and install trees and plants (in fact, they've already started in some locations). Utility companies will also be coordinating to remove their old poles and equipment, and then the County will have to follow to patch up where those items were removed.

Plus the bus stops?

Yes, the Columbia Pike Transit Station shelters are being installed one at a time right now. This is a separate project from the road work, but still play an important part of the Columbia Pike transportation network and will be complete at the same time as the road project.
