Welcome to our December newsletter! As we embrace the festive spirit and the cozy chill of winter, this is a wonderful time to pause, reflect on the year, and create lasting memories together. This month, we've gathered essential resources and engaging activities designed to help your children finish the year strong while enjoying the magic of the holiday season!

FCPS has many resources for families designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth. The Family Resource Center offers free webinars, confidential consultations, a lending library, tutoring services, and resources to help adults support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities.The new FCPS Family Academy is a targeted outreach effort to empower and build capacity, connections, cognition, confidence, and awareness through interactive learning experiences, tools, and resources for families in FCPS through a one-stop approach.

Recognizing, Understanding, and Responding to Impact of Traumatic Stress

December 5, 10-11:30 a.m.

Come learn how trauma impacts the brain and gather valuable information to help you recognize what is happening, why it is happening, and how to effectively respond in ways that promote safety and support. Register here


The Connected Family: Navigating the Digital World Together

Tuesday, December 9 - 6:30-8 p.m.

Chantilly High School Library

Technology connects us like never before, but it’s important to know how to stay safe while using it. This family workshop provides hands-on learning about internet safety to inform families of:

  • Today’s popular social sites and apps used by students
  • Effective strategies to engage youth in discussions regarding internet safety
  • 7 primary topics to discuss with youth that will remain important from kindergarten through adulthood

Join FCPS Intervention and Prevention Services to learn how your family can build healthy, secure, and positive habits online together.

Safe and Supportive Learning Environments for All Learners

December 12, 10-11:30 a.m.

This presentation explores how trauma-informed practices and social-emotional learning (SEL) support student well-being and academic success. We discuss the impact of stress and trauma on children, how it can manifest in their behavior, and the importance of creating safe and supportive learning environments. We will highlight protective factors that foster student resilience and growth. Additionally, we will showcase helpful practices at school that teach and reinforce essential skills such as self-awareness, self-management, and relationship building. Finally, we will explore practical strategies families can use at home to strengthen these skills and nurture resilience in their children. Register here

McLean Holiday Art & Crafts Festival

Friday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 6, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Admission is $5, valid for all three days of the show. Free for children 12 and younger.

Celebrate seasonal cheer at this delightful three-day indoor juried show featuring approximately 80 talented regional artisans.


McLean Winterfest Parade

The McLean Revitalization Corporation (MRC) is excited to present the 2025 McLean Winterfest Parade on Sunday, Dec. 7, celebrating the warmth and magic of the season! The festivities begin with a Pre-Parade Showcase at 2:30 p.m. at the Langley Shopping Center, followed by the Winterfest Parade at 3:30 p.m. along Old Chain Bridge Road.

Immediately afterward, stick around for the brand-new Winterfest Block Party, featuring free Santa photos, live music, food vendors and family fun. Community groups, schools and businesses are invited to participate in or sponsor this cherished McLean tradition. Be sure to follow MRC on Instagram at mclean_revitalization for more exciting updates about the parade and other Downtown McLean initiatives!

Admission: $20/$15 MCC district residents

Meet and greet Santa and other holiday characters and enjoy cookie decorating and snowy crafts. Milk and hot chocolate will be served by an adult. All attendees must register.
