Plenty of investors can identify when a stockmarket is bubbly. But even the shrewdest struggle to predict when the bubble is about to pop. Looking at some unconventional market gauges might help. (We still don’t expect them to make our fortunes. Or yours.)  

In Europe another form of financial trouble is brewing. As populations age, the burden of providing state pensions will increase; yet pensioners present and future resist reductions in benefits or increases in pension age. Worse, few state schemes are properly funded. There is no way of making the arithmetic pleasant.
