ICE detains Revere woman with family ties to White House press secretary |
A Brazilian woman who had been living in the United States for most of her life is being held in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Louisiana as she fights deportation. The woman, identified as 33-year-old Bruna Ferreira of Revere, Massachusetts, is the mother of the nephew of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, according to official sources familiar with the case. Ferreira’s lawyer Todd Pomerleau said she was detained on Nov. 12 after leaving her home in Revere to pick up her 11-year-old son in New Hampshire. Pomerleau said ICE agents stopped her and detained her. She then was taken to Vermont before being moved to Louisiana. |

Thanksgiving is just a few days away, and if you’re cooking the centerpiece of dinner, food safety experts have some tips to help you avoid a disaster. Cooking fires spike on Thanksgiving Day to about 1,400 each year, about triple the number of daily average cooking fires throughout the year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Deep-fried turkey, which has gained in popularity over the years, is particularly dangerous and can lead to devastating burns, destruction of property and other injuries. “Every year, we see preventable fires and injuries caused by cooking accidents during the holidays,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman. “We’re urging everyone to stay focused when in the kitchen because a few minutes of attention can make the difference between a happy holiday and a heartbreaking one.” |

A nasty, highly contagious virus is spreading across the country ahead of the holiday season — and it’s not the flu or Covid. Norovirus, also called the “winter vomiting disease,” has been rising across the nation since as early as mid-October, especially in states like Louisiana, Michigan and Indiana, according to data from WastewaterSCAN, an academic program through Stanford University in partnership with Emory University. With data through Nov. 21, Amanda Bidwell, scientific program manager for the WastewaterSCAN program, said norovirus wastewater concentrations have increased nationwide by 69% since October. |
