Every now and then the algorithm shows me something that actually adds joy to my life, and comedian Nnamdi Ngwe’s Instagram account has been that for me as of late. There, he has a few uber-millennial recurring bits, but my favorite is the one where he “re-enacts” ’90s and ’00s commercials for CD compilations — think Now That’s What I Call Music!; etc. There’s nothing extravagant about these skits, and that’s key to their charm: It’s just him in a bedroom, mouthing the ad’s audio while donning an assortment of wigs, facial hair, and props. Here are some of my faves. The precision of his mimicry, the long pauses (you’ll understand once you watch), the spatula(!) that’s always hanging in the corner of the screen — I have no notes, it’s perfect, all I ask is that he just keeps on excavating these nostalgic gems. — Aisha Harris
Super-hot take here: Hayley Williams, co-founder and frontwoman of Paramore, is very talented. And I’ve been loving her latest solo project with the fantastic title Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party — it finds Williams doing what she does best, combining indelible hooks with introspective and highly relatable lyrics. There are no duds, but the thumping alt-pop “Mirtazapine” might be my favorite track; songs touting the benefits of anti-depressant medication rarely go so hard. — Aisha Harris |
