Kicking off

The Patriots have a legitimate shot at being the AFC's top seed come January.

Their turnaround, from being cellar dwellers with woeful 4-13 records the past two seasons, has been mind-blowing.

While there was an expected jump with Mike Vrabel taking over as head coach, and Drake Maye being in Year 2, nothing like this was forecast.

Not even close.

Thursday night's 27-14 win over the New York Jets made it eight straight wins for the team (9-2), who have a mini-bye this weekend.

If the Patriots play their cards right, they will be the top AFC team, earning a first-round bye. They have what many consider the easiest schedule down the stretch of any of the top teams.

If they beat the teams they're supposed to beat, that should be enough to claim the top spot.

The Indianapolis Colts (8-2), who have a bye week Sunday, and the Denver Broncos (8-2), who are facing the Kansas City Chiefs, have much tougher schedules.

The LA Chargers (7-3) Buffalo Bills (6-3) and Chiefs (5-4) might also work their way into the mix up top, but they have a lot more work to do and need Mike Vrabel's team to falter.

With the Patriots taking down the Jets, they have six games remaining. Of those six, only Buffalo has a winning record. With Lamar Jackson back, Baltimore, currently 4-5, is a legitimate opponent for them Week 16.

They also won't have to face Joe Burrow when they travel to Cincinnati for their Week 12 game.

The way the team is playing, the way Drake Maye is playing, along with their overall vibe, it's hard to believe they won't be resting the first week, and hosting a game at home the following week.

It would be an upset if that didn't happen.

(Editor's note: Mason's prediction ran Thursday given the Patriots played the Jets Thursday night. He thought it would be more of a blowout, a 27-14 win was still plenty good).

Sports enterprise writer Chris Mason returns for Week 11:

Conventional wisdom says Thursday Night Football should be a rock fight.

The Patriots and Jets are divisional opponents with only three days to prepare for a cold November night in Foxborough. That’s often a formula for a slog-it-out, low-scoring evening.

However, conventional wisdom hasn’t been watching the Patriots and the Jets lately.

Mike Vrabel’s team is firing on all cylinders amidst a seven-game winning streak. Whatever your metric of choice is for the Patriots offense, they’re in the Top 10 — total offense, scoring offense, offensive EPA etc. — and Drake Maye is playing like a bonafide MVP candidate.

As the second-year signal caller has quarterbacked the Patriots to an 8-2 record, Maye has completed 71.7% of his passes for 2,555 yards while throwing 19 touchdown passes to five interceptions and he’s averaging 8.9 yards per attempt.

He ranks second in completion percentage, second in yards per attempt and third in passing yards; this hasn’t been dinking and dunking.

Meanwhile, the Jets just jettisoned two of their best defensive players at the trade deadline, Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner, which should only make life easier on Maye and company.

And yes, the Jets are coming off their second win of the season, but take a closer look at last weekend’s 27-20 win over the rudderless Cleveland Browns. Justin Fields went 6-of-11 for 54 yards — for the entire game — and New York picked up 169 yards of total offense (3.6 yards per snap). They gashed Cleveland with returns on special teams, but that’s not a sustainable way to win football games.

The prediction here?

The Patriots buck conventional Thursday Night Football wisdom and turn this one into a one-sided blowout. New England takes an early lead, then Fields and the Jets offense aren’t able to throw their way back into the game.

Final score prediction: Patriots 31, Jets 6.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Do you think the Patriots will lose Josh McDaniels to another head coaching job? -  Matt from Sharon

Guregian: McDaniels has two strikes against him as a head coach first in Denver, then with Las Vegas. He also has another strike for backing out of the Indianapolis job after agreeing to take it.

Given the job he's done with Drake Maye, he's probably enhanced his profile once again. It's certainly possible there could be some interest, but teams might still be a little gun-shy given his history with the top job.

The New York Giants have a vacancy after firing Brian Daboll. It's not out of the question the Giants might kick the tires, and gauge McDaniels interest.

A few weeks ago, when asked if he would be tempted to flee for a head coaching situation, McDaniels talked about not wanting to uproot his family.

My guess is it won't happen.

Beyond that, the Patriots really don't want to have Maye deal with three different coordinators in three years, and possibly, three different systems.
