Kicking off

The Patriots didn't make any noise at the NFL trading deadline. They stood pat.

While their reasons for not bringing in reinforcements have merit, whether it was not wanting to surrender their much-needed draft capital, or not finding the right players available, it's still tough to swallow.

Opportunity was knocking.

Sitting in first place in the division with a 7-2 record, riding a 6-game winning streak, it was the right time to be aggressive.

Being a contender in a weak AFC, anything was possible.

At the trade deadline, both the Chiefs and Ravens were on the outside of the playoffs looking in. That's not to say neither team would get in, but it was a sign of landscape.

If the Patriots are able to stay the course, they could conceivably win the division, be the first or second seed, and have home field advantage.

Only, that scenario is going to be tougher to realize.

The Patriots did not make any moves to shore up needy areas on the roster, namely edge defender, running back and safety leaving them one injury away from trouble.

They unloaded unwanted players DE Keion White and S Kyle Dugger - further depleting depth at those positions -  and that was pretty much it outside of adding players to the practice squad.

Their inactivity was disappointing to say the least.

Deputy Editor of Content Jim Pignatiello returns for Week 10:

The Patriots stood, well, pat at the trade deadline this week, seemingly prioritizing the future rather than the present, despite a 7-2 record and a wide open AFC.

Tied with the Colts and Broncos for the best record in the conference, New England has a real chance to be the No. 1 seed in the postseason.

Our own Karen Guregian wondered if that was a mistake:

The Patriots weren’t unwilling to deal, it just had to be the right deal.

They were trying to come down somewhere in the middle where the assets unloaded wouldn’t hurt the overall plan, and still acquire decent reinforcements.

Their rationale is valid. It’s a good strategy if you can pull it off. It just didn’t happen.

It’s disappointing that it didn’t.

They have the coach, and the quarterback, who is on a rookie deal.

As long as Vrabel and Maye are around, the future is bright. But the schedule will be tougher next year. Injuries might factor in.

They might not have a better road to the promised land. They could very well wind up kicking themselves for not striking while the fire was hot.

Now, with no real reinforcements this week aside from Jerry Rice’s son, the Patriots face one of the toughest games on their schedule as they head to Tampa to take on Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers (6-2).

The question now becomes whether the Patriots’ nightmare second half against the Falcons was a sign of things to come or simply a bad 30 minutes of play.

I worry that it is more of the former, especially against a Super Bowl contender with no cavalry having arrived Tuesday.

Final score prediction: Bucs 31, Patriots 17

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Is Kyle Williams a bust? -  John from Haverhill

Guregian: It's too early to call Williams a bust. It's been tough for him to get playing time ahead of Stefon Diggs, Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas and Mack Hollins.

With Boutte expected to miss a little time with a hamstring injury, Williams should get on the field more.

To this point, the rookie receiver and Drake Maye have not been on the same page. Williams has only caught two balls for 20 yards. He's been targeted six times.

So he's clearly not off to the best start. But there's still time for him to figure it out, especially getting more reps.
