A letter from our editor:
The defining feature of my home is its simplicity. When I host, the compliments are usually along the lines of — "Wow, it's so clean in here" — by which they mean — "You don't have very much stuff."
It's true. I've just gone through a big life change, which entailed a move where I started from scratch. It took a lot of work this year to fill in the basics, and I've been diligent about purchasing only things that I love and will last. For the most part, that means I scour Facebook Marketplace with super-specific search terms. (Isn't it funny how vintage items — things that are already old and used — are the best guarantee that they'll last a long time, if not forever?) Or I wait for the top-shelf kitchen or home appliance to come on sale (which I always follow up by enrolling in the warranty program). In short, I've resisted purchasing anything without real purpose and value. And I've begun to love living this way.
But, as the temperature drops here in Brooklyn, and the trees look more bare every day, what has purpose and value is shifting for me. I'm realizing my apartment is not set up for hunkering down in the winter. It only strikes me now that lush rugs, throw blankets, and house plants all have their own function in a home. While I won't be trading in my minimalist mindset for the trending maximalism, I am thinking a lot these days about how to bring in a warmth and ease to my space that still feels purposeful.
For this edition, I've brought together some ways that I'm thinking about how to craft a livable space alongside practical tips and finds that I hope will take us both well into the winter months. xx
With a newfound warmth, Ashley Senior Editor
