It's only three letters. One syllable. Probably one of the first English words you ever learnt.

But 'the' is causing you more problems than you realise.

Here's what I mean:

• Do you say 'I'm going to the hospital' or 'I'm going to hospital'?
• What about 'I never eat the breakfast' or 'I never eat breakfast'?
• And is it 'What are you doing for the Easter' or just 'What are you doing for Easter'?

If you hesitated even for a second, you definitely weren’t the only one. Students at every level – yes, even C1 and C2 learners – struggle with this tiny but mighty word.

Why? Because there are often exceptions for similar things – like mountains and mountain ranges – that follow different rules.
