TOP OF THE AGENDA | Democrats score key election victories |
| | All three winning candidates made tackling the cost of living a core campaign message. Credit: Getty Images | Twelve months ago, Republican candidate Donald Trump claimed a decisive victory in the US presidential election - as analysis editor Ros Atkins reflects in this video, "It's been a year." Fast forward 365 days, and the picture from the ballots in various US states looks very different, with Democrats claiming key results. Zohran Mamdani - a 34-year-old with immigrant roots and a bold, left-wing platform - was elected mayor of New York, while Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill claimed the governor's races in Virginia and New Jersey. It is clear the Democratic Party will be buoyed by a big night, write Donovan Slack and Gareth Evans - and might look forward to the midterm elections in November 2026 with renewed energy. |

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED | How Kentucky UPS plane crash unfolded |
| | It is unclear what caused the plane to crash, igniting a massive fireball after it failed to take off from the runway. | At least nine people have died and 11 left injured after a UPS cargo plane crashed while taking off from an international airport in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday. BBC Verify has been analysing footage that emerged overnight to piece together how the crash unfolded and what could have caused it. |
| | Jake Horton, Joshua Cheetham and Matt Murphy |
| How did the incident start? | Data from tracking website FlightRadar24 shows the plane began to taxi along the 17R runway at around 17:15 local time (22:15 GMT) and managed to reach a top speed of 214mph (344km/h). But verified footage shows that, by the time the plane reached this speed, a fire had completely engulfed its left wing, and the aircraft failed to gain altitude before the massive explosion. | Why did the crash cause such damage? | Footage from the aftermath of the crash showed a scene of complete chaos with multiple fires blazing across a large swathe of the site. Officials said the aircraft was carrying 38,000 gallons (144,000 litres) of fuel for the planned long journey to Hawaii when it crashed. The blaze was likely amplified on the ground because the aircraft slammed into a fuel recycling business next to the airport. | What could have caused the crash? | Air traffic control communications we reviewed are largely garbled and full of interference, so no meaningful conversation can be heard about the crash as it unfolded. But analysts who spoke to us suggested that a dramatic failure of two of the engines may have been responsible for the disaster. | | | |
