My wife, Grace, works for an organization that finds mentors for at-risk kids. Her work brings her into the homes of families that live at or beneath the poverty line. They’re always stressed but right now they’re particularly worried. Why? Because if the government shutdown does not end, many of them will lose SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, and struggle to feed their kids.
This is a crisis and an opportunity. This story explains what might happen if SNAP distributions stop, and details ways some churches and food pantries are already stepping up to help feed families. I hope it encourages all of us to think of ways our churches might answer the call in this time of tightening resources.
