Trick or Treat
From Chicken Soup for the Soul: I Can’t Believe My Dog Did That!
By Lisa Mackinder

Shadows of a thousand years rise again unseen,
Voices whisper in the trees, “Tonight is Halloween!”
~Dexter Kozen

“Trick or treat!”

Halloween is full of fun, costumes, and treats — but it can also be a little spooky for our furry friends. Here are a few tips to make sure your pets have a safe and stress-free night:

  1. Keep Candy Out of Reach. Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free treats), and other candies can be toxic to pets. Store them in sealed containers well out of paw’s reach.
  2. Watch the Door. With trick-or-treaters coming and going, it’s easy for pets to slip outside. Keep them in a safe, quiet room during peak hours.
  3. Choose Pet-Friendly Costumes. If your pet wears a costume, make sure it fits comfortably, doesn’t restrict movement, and has no small parts they could chew off.
  4. Decorate Carefully. Pumpkins with candles can be a fire hazard if knocked over. Opt for battery-operated lights instead.
  5. Mind the Noise & Activity. Doorbells, crowds, and unusual sights can cause stress. Provide a calm space away from the commotion.

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping your pets safe and happy this Halloween. Let’s make it a treat for everyone — no tricks!
