  • President Donald Trump said that he approved $25 million to cover the cost of recovery efforts in Western Alaska, after after Gov. Mike Dunleavy requested a federal disaster declaration last week.

  • State and city officials are scrambling to find accommodations at hotels, short-term rentals and dormitories for hundreds of evacuees in Anchorage after the remnants of Typhoon Halong damaged their homes in Western Alaska.

  • Despite the federal government shutdown, the Trump administration is proceeding with new oil leasing on Alaska’s North Slope.

A small coastal town in Oregon has been inundated by thousands of sea cucumbers that washed ashore this week. The creatures that normally burrow into the sand along the low tideline ended up scattered across more than 2 miles of beach. More than 650 residents from Western Alaska were evacuated into Anchorage and more may be coming, city officials said. The efforts to provide more stable housing come as the response to the catastrophic storm moves its focus beyond evacuations to finding support for displaced victims.

According to Gov. Mike Dunleavy, the federal disaster declaration authorizes federal authorities to cover 100% of the cost of “all categories of relief assistance for the next 90 days.”
