Hello! I am writing this in Palo Alto, where I’m reporting on a few things that I’m super excited about! The news is embargoed for later this week, so I can’t say anything about it now. But in the meantime, it gives me a chance to test travel gear (ABT = Always Be Testing). The Tumi 19 Degree Lite carry-on is about a pound lighter than other polycarbonate carry-ons I’ve tried. The weight difference—and the shiny, rather than pebbled, exterior—is noticeable.

My kids also reminded me that even though it’s not even Halloween yet, “we” (I) have to start shopping for the holidays. In that spirit, you may have noticed that we (WIRED) have started to publish this year’s gift guides. If you know anyone who golfs, is perpetually cold, or has an out-of-control green thumb, we have a few suggestions. As always, send anything you think we should be testing to adrienne_so@wired.com.

This is my favorite gift guide; nothing could be suited more to my abilities than writing about my struggle to stay alive in freezing (72-degree-Fahrenheit) temperatures. I’m wearing this little fleece bandana right now and am about to buy another. |
It is really hard to propagate mushrooms. Although I have a black thumb, I am intrigued by this affordable mushroom growing kit that turned editor Kat Merck into a Crazy Mushroom Lady, leaving bags full of shrooms on her neighbors’ stoops. |
I’m worried that I will have to start writing about my own toilet adventures soon. Last week, Kohler launched its own potty health monitoring system, and reviewer Brent Rose recently wrote about his journey into decoding his gut microbiome. |
I have been the happy recipient of several bags of reviewer Matthew Korfhage’s excess coffee subscriptions, and I feel I have picked the wrong beat. If you mostly buy giant bags of coffee to drink forever, Trade’s coffee subscription is a great way to discover new brews, new growers, and new roasters. |
These are the things that elicited the most oohs and aahs when I pulled them out of my bag at a recent press event. |

All I want from a tripod are two things: First, that it doesn’t use a clamp and trigger my iPhone’s Camera Control button, and second, that it doesn’t cost over $100. The ShiftCam SnapStand meets both of those requirements handily. (You do need a phone with MagSafe.)
- As you can see from the pic above, I’m currently testing Troubadour’s Apex Backpack. It’s a bit stiff, and the pockets are a bit fussy to my taste, but everyone who saw it really liked it.

I have the DJI Mic Mini, and it’s so easy to use that I’ve just started to use it to record voice memos from interview subjects while I’m out, instead of actually writing things down. I’m terrified of losing the tiny magnet that clips it onto your shirt, but so far, it hasn’t happened.
