Japanese startup reboot: In Japan, regulators are cracking down on the spate of tiny startups going public prematurely, and the plan to cull those that fail to scale up is leading to significant consolidation. Founders are being encouraged to build up before hitting public markets and aim higher with their valuations.

Builder.ai probe: US criminal investigators stepped up their probe of failed UK AI startup Builder.ai, serving a subpoena seeking information from the company’s former chief financial officer.

Pixel superfans: Google will choose a group of Pixel smartphone enthusiasts to test its upcoming devices ahead of their public introduction. The “Trusted Tester” program will select 15 people from a pool of applicants.

Proxy adviser Institutional Shareholder Services recommended Core Scientific investors reject an acquisition bid from CoreWeave, saying the all-stock proposal is not high enough. The two data center companies — already partners — have benefited from the demand for AI cloud computing and services. Shareholders are scheduled to vote Oct. 30 on the proposed deal.
