Good afternoon. It’s Monday, Oct. 20.

In today's newsletter:

  • Demonstrators packed Anchorage’s Town Square Park on Saturday for a "No Kings" protest against the Trump administration's actions affecting a range of issues, including immigration, health care and public media funding.

  • As the flow of evacuees has slowed, officials are preparing to begin repair and cleanup efforts in villages affected by the catastrophic storm that devastated communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region.

  • The Municipality of Anchorage has paid rent for its downtown City Hall location for decades, but it may have another opportunity to purchase the building as soon as this year.

Halloween lies just around the corner, so there’s no better time to delve into a bit of horror, especially if it’s set far to the north, where strange things wander across the tundra. Check out David James' review of the latest in an Inuit anthology, "Taaqtumi," which is teeming with Arctic horror stories.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly cloudy today with a high around 43 degrees, and we should see much of the same on Tuesday and Wednesday. The forecast calls for a chance of rain later in the week, with daytime highs hovering in the low to mid-40s for the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
