OpenAI's Sora 2 isn't just an AI slop machine, it's a controversy machine too. The latest is the app spitting out videos of Martin Luther King Jr. spouting racist language. As a result, the AI giant said it would pause the ability to generate King. I've spent a fair amount of time on Sora, and was struck by the number of videos featuring the civil rights leader. They almost all start the same way, with the civil rights leader saying his "I have a dream" line before adding some silly or nonsensical demand. A common one that pops up is for Sora to remove the restrictions it has on copyright content, but there's a meme-like quality to all of them. Seeing those videos in addition to other notable deceased figures like Michael Jackson and Bob Ross, I wondered how long they would remain on the platform. Notably, OpenAI is only doing this because King's estate made the request. This goes back to the tedious "opt out" approach to the platform that puts the responsibility on rights holders and individuals to voice their desire to be removed from the platform. By the way, it's been more than a week since OpenAI announced new guardrails and I'm still able to generate copyrighted material. Here's me sneaking into the Death Star and blowing it up from the inside (wearing a shoddy monk's robe and lightsaber). The feed is filled with similarly whacky, but ultimately soulless content, and it's starting to feel like the gimmick is wearing thin. If you haven't, give it a whirl over the weekend, even if it's just to see what the talk is all about.
