| Today’s news and insights for grocery leaders
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
The use cases for artificial intelligence cover a lot of ground in the grocery industry, from crafting shopper recommendations to managing data on the backend of operations.
AI isn’t new to the industry, but there is still an ongoing learning curve. Kroger established a designated innovation lab in order to understand and best utilize technology advancements, while Heritage Grocers Group leans on pilots and beta testing to ensure a smooth adoption of AI.
As AI capabilities become more mainstream and rapidly develop, it’s crucial that grocers not simply invest in flashy technology, but fully understand how they need AI to work for them.
Consumers also factor into the AI equation. According to the 2025 CPG survey by PwC, 40% say they plan to use AI for comparison shopping by 2030, and an estimated one-third of those individuals expect all purchasing decisions to be automated. But grocers should bear in mind that nearly two-thirds of respondents said at least one safeguard would help them feel comfortable with AI-driven shopping.
