This weekend, I tested the new Apple Watch Ultra 3 by going on a weekend camping trip. An epic storm blew in. Apparently, we pitched our tent in a sandy indentation, and when I woke up at 1 am my daughter and I were floating on about 5 inches of water, lying on an air mattress inside the tent. We did not return to solid land until about 3 am, when the storm blew out. Anyway, the North Face Wawona 6 has a watertight bottom. Kudos to my husband for staking the tent down well, even if he doesn’t win any awards for picking sites.

You can now read my review of the Apple Watch Series 11, second-gen Watch SE, and Watch Ultra 3. Keep an eye out for editor Julian Chokkattu’s iPhone 17 reviews later this week. Any tips? Did you preorder a (barf-a-licious) Cosmic Orange phone and want to tell me all about it? Send tips to adrienne_so@wired.com and keep checking WIRED.com for more news and reviews as Techtember rolls on.

The big news this week is that Apple has a new skinny, skinny iPhone. Julian’s reviews of the newest iPhones will be coming out soon, but in the meantime, we can say that the iPhone 17 looks like it will be the best for most people, as usual. (This model does not come in orange.) |
Most people do not really need a dedicated camera, especially one just for travel. But you might, if you don’t particularly like composing shots on your phone. The Sony RX100 VII is both very capable and pocketable, and it has excellent tracking autofocus for action shots. |
I’m on a mission to cut weight this year—from my backpack, that is. I have the plastic Yeti Yonder water bottle, but if you want to stick with the classic Nalgene, I think it’s also worth noting that it comes in a much tinier 16-ounce size that you can fit in a tiny tote bag.

I don’t know how much longer I can go without a Dyson hair tool. The Nural is our favorite hair dryer (and especially good for curly hair, since it has a reengineered diffuser). I’m also considering the Supersonic r, since it’s much lighter and I have very little patience for drying my hair in the first place.

If we went early-fall camping and stayed huddled around the fire for hours, here are some things I would bring up! |
-
Is it betraying my age to say that the iconic first riff of “Last Goodbye” always sends shivers straight up my spine? Planning on hunkering down to watch the Jeff Buckley documentary tonight (with tissues).
-
On a totally different note, I was emotionally coerced into taking my kids to see the new Demon Slayer movie (which is different from Kpop Demon Hunters), which I do not … precisely recommend for kids, as it is shockingly gory! But they have been watching the Demon Slayer television show during some unsupervised hours and were unfazed. It is action-packed and surprisingly poignant.
- My kid, who has previously been a Stardew Valley/Animal Crossing gamer, has really gotten into Hollow Knight: Silksong and may be dragging me along with her.
