Tariffs are heading to the U.S. Supreme Court this fall. The high court agreed to hear two legal challenges to President Donald Trump's use of emergency powers to impose tariffs on trade partners across the world. That power typically lies solely with Congress. If the Supreme Court rules against the Trump administration, they may have to refund importers, potentially to the tune of $1 trillion, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned in a declaration filed with the Supreme Court. Oral arguments for the fast-tracked case start the first week of November.
But for now, the tariffs are in place, and we're starting to feel them. While it's probably impossible to avoid tariff-driven price hikes completely, there are some practical ways to minimize their effects on your budget. We're talking shopping secondhand, buying local and even growing your own food.
