I didn’t listen to National Public Radio growing up — we were a commercial AM news family — but when I had a newborn, in the afternoon witching hours that every new parent knows, I’d often switch on the network’s show “All Things Considered.” I was, week after week, amazed at how the dulcet tones of Robert Siegel, E.J. Dionne and David Brooks soothed my infant. And they kept me company, letting me feel like an intelligent, engaged adult again. I admired their respectful disagreements while knowing I came away with fuller, wiser answers to the day’s pressing questions. This regular feature on “All Things Considered" ended nearly eight years ago, but Times Opinion decided to bring the three men back together as part of our weekly column The Conversation, which has always had similar aims. I’m so pleased they agreed. Their thoughtful debates are exactly the sort of discourse we need in the complex, often troubling times we find ourselves in. In their latest discussion, they speak to the American slide toward authoritarianism, how the Republican Party has changed and the joys (and sorrows) of baseball season. I’m also delighted to announce that, after a storied career at The Washington Post, E.J. has joined Times Opinion as a regular contributor. We can look forward to his writing, as well, in the coming weeks. Here’s what we’re focusing on today:
