Growing up in my house was kind of like living out a sitcom where the Italian stereotypes were so strong that you could smell the garlic:
• Fitted clear plastic covers adorned our living room furniture. They made noises when someone sat on them, but that was rarely allowed.
• Every adult relative in my life smoked cigarettes except my three grandmothers.
• Each of my three grandmothers lived past ninety, shrunk as she aged, wore pajama-style housecoats daily, and occasionally wore hairnets all day long in the house and out. They did not drive nor did they own jeans or sneakers.
• Talking was done loudly with grand hand gestures.
• Price dropping happened; if it was expensive, that made it good.
