Friday Fun Day
I didn't plan it this way, but today's WYWW features a lot of contests. The first makes a splash. The second summons the lawyers. The third goes to the dogs.
You'll also notice there is no photo atop today's newsletter. That is because I couldn't get the rights to the photo that accompanies the first story. You'll just have to click on the story to see it ... but don't have any food or drink in your mouth when you do. You've been warned! - Sean
Why it matters: Writing the opening passage to a feature article can be a tricky endeavor for journalists. This lede by GQ's Matthew Roberson is a masterpiece that makes you want to take the plunge: "The humble belly flop is actually an athletic marvel combining daring courage, brutish savagery, and Bugs Bunny-level physical comedy. It requires a person to expose one of their softest, most vulnerable areas of their body to a walloping sting, all for a few laughs." Your humble editor has serious belly flop game. Or at least I thought I did. When I first saw the photo atop this article, two things happened:
- The coffee that was in my mouth erupted out of my nose and all over my keyboard.
- I realized Phil Di Ruggiero is the belly flop GOAT.
That photo is perfection. The anticipation of the crowd ... Phil's belly-forward form ... The confidently nonchalant expression on his face. It is a majestic moment. Cue the endorsements?: This might sound odd, but my eyes are also drawn to the watch. Considering Phil's oh-so-sophisticated pose, the photo would be a spectacular ad for a watch company. C'mon Rolex, Richard Mille or Patek Phillipe ... splash some cash on Phil!
Why it matters: Am I including this because I just finished reading yet another John Grisham book? Probably. But the books, movies and TV shows are popular for a reason, so let's dive into these rankings.
I have no problem with "The Pelican Brief" snatching the top spot, but placing "The Firm" all the way down at #4 is a travesty. Surely, the mafia is involved. I guess I have no choice but to find a young and not-yet-jaded lawyer to investigate corruption in the rankings.
Why it matters: The 18th annual iPhone Photography Awards highlight the artistic potential of mobile photography, with entries judged on artistic merit and originality. This year's grand prize went to Jarod Peraza for his nighttime photo 'Viajero Nocturno' taken in Colombia. Peraza's photo is a worthy winner, but my favorite is 'Moto Cães' .... because those dogs are having a rad time!

Weekend Watch
Why it matters: This week's Weekend Watch is a show I haven't seen yet, but it's hard to go wrong with Snoopy and the gang.
'Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical' is now streaming on Apple TV+, reviving the Peanuts franchise with its first musical since 1988. The storyline follows Charlie Brown and his sister Sally at summer camp, where they work to save their beloved Cloverhill. The special features digital animation that reflects the original Peanuts style and includes new songs and a jazz piano score.

Wait ... What?!?!
Why it matters: It seems like this story is about 30 years old, but I promise it is current.
Celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan, famed for creating the 'Rachel cut' for Jennifer Aniston on 'Friends,' has launched his first namesake haircare line. The collection includes seven core products and is available online at Sephora and in stores nationwide.

Animal Kingdom
Why it matters: Phil Di Ruggiero isn't the only goat in this edition of WYWW. Amidst increasing wildfire threats in southern Europe, Catalonia's innovative use of goats for wildfire prevention has shown promising results. The goats help clear combustible vegetation, reducing fire risks.

The Most Popular Story From Yesterday's WYWW Was...
|
Happy Hour Fun
Why it matters: Milwaukee's Schlitz brewery, once a dominant force in the beer market, faced a dramatic decline due to corruption and marketing blunders. The brewery's illegal marketing tactics, spearheaded by Bob Martin, led to SEC investigations and damaged its reputation. Additionally, a poorly received ad campaign further alienated consumers. Despite these setbacks, the brand was revived by Pabst, which restored its original beer formula.

About the Editors
I have a truly epic belly flop photo of my brother Dan. I really, really, really want to share it in WYWW, but I'm heading to Annapolis next week to visit Dan and his family and I don't want him to make me sleep in the dog house with Snoopy. Have a great weekend!
If you like WYWW, hate WYWW or want to submit a story, shoot me an email. Yes, I actually read them. The kindest compliment you can pay to WYWW is to send this link to your friends, family and colleagues so they can subscribe. Thanks!
