All hail California Govenor Gavin Newsom! Yesterday, Newsom gave a speech to outline his state’s plan to fight back against Trump’s efforts to rig the midterm elections by redistricting various red states, and thus to give him more GOP seats in the House in the next election. They are calling it the Election Rigging Response Act. Newsom began his short speech yesterday this way: “We are in Los Angeles. The most diverse city in the most diverse county in the most diverse state in the world’s most diverse democracy! What makes LA great, what makes California great, what makes the United States great is that at our best we don’t tolerate our diversity, we celebrate our diversity. It is a point of pride, we are all in this together!” The area of LA where Newsom spoke is known as Little Tokyo. Newsom mentions that “there are dozens and dozens of ICE agents” outside. He asks the crowd, do you think this is a coincidence? To advance ICE arrests near where he was speaking on the day many democratic officials were gathered. Certainly not a coincidence. “Donald Trump is dissapearing people.” “It’s not enough to hold hands and have a candlight vigil and talk about how the world should be.” “We’ve got to meet fire with fire!” “It’s not complicated, we are doing this in reaction to what Donald Trump is doing, calling the govenor of Texas and saying ‘find me five seats.’ We are doing it mindful of our better angles and our higher morals.” “We can’t stand back and watch this democracy disappear, district by district all across the country. We need to stand up and be firm in our resolve.” Unlike what Trump and his cronies are doing, Newsom has created a temporary, transparent process. Voters in California will decide on Nov 5 this year on a measure that says if the Republicans redistrict states to favor the GOP, California will do the same. It’s an exciting, bold action. Here is a more in-depth description on what Newsom is doing. And here is his speech (it starts at 51:35 after other officials speak about the problems and need for action) Thanks for being here.
