Researchers have developed a DNA methylation-based blood test that identifies type 2 diabetes patients at high risk of heart attack or stroke years in advance, outperforming traditional risk scores. The study in Cell Reports Medicine highlights the test's ability to predict macrovascular events by analyzing over 853,000 DNA methylation sites, potentially revolutionizing prevention strategies.
A new BMJ panel guideline emphasizes cardiovascular and kidney risk when assessing SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists for type 2 diabetes. Patients at high risk for complications receive strong recommendations for these drugs, while those at lower risk receive weaker endorsements. The guideline reflects the increasing use of these medications for various indications in the US, although access remains a challenge due to cost and insurance issues.

Nutrition & Wellness
Registered dietitians Natalie Rizzo, Kristin Kirkpatrick and Caroline Susie, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, urge people to reconsider the concept of "net carbs" as a dietary measure, arguing that it oversimplifies complex digestion processes and lacks official recognition from bodies like the FDA. While the net carb concept can guide individuals toward fiber-providing foods, it may mislead due to varying absorption rates of fiber and sugar alcohols. They recommend focusing on a balanced diet with whole foods rather than relying on net carb calculations.

A1C testing combined with the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score in emergency departments can identify undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes, particularly in ethnically diverse populations, according to a study in Diabetes Therapy. The study, conducted in Great Britain, found that 11.6% of participants had prediabetes and 8.3% had diabetes, according to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence criteria.
Retatrutide, developed by Eli Lilly, marks a new advancement in weight loss treatments by targeting three hormone receptors: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. This multi-receptor approach sets it apart from existing drugs and enhances its potential in managing blood sugar, appetite, and metabolism.
Distinct generational differences in attitudes toward GLP-1 drug regulations have emerged with millennials more inclined to support fewer regulations, with 31% favoring less oversight compared to 19% who want more, according to a report from weight-loss company Levity. In contrast, 37% of Gen Z respondents prefer stricter rules, reflecting a cautious approach toward the drugs.
A presentation at the American Society for Preventive Cardiology Congress focused on the importance of early cardiovascular risk assessment for young adults to prevent premature cardiac events, at a time when obesity and diabetes have become more prevalent. The PREVENT risk age calculator may improve communication about the need for preventive interventions.
