What a day, and what a great way to wrap up the 720 ABC Perth Breakfast Blitz.
120 people crammed into the main ABC studio in East Perth this morning for a very special edition of the 720 Breakfast program. As well as hearing about the growing numbers of rough sleepers in Perth and their desperate need for a meal to start the day, we heard stories of positivity from Uniting WA volunteers and were entertained by the magnificent St Pat’s Starlight Hotel choir.
What started as a small idea four weeks ago to provide some breakfast essentials to those who need it, blossomed into an incredible community effort. Schools, politicians, a café, workplaces and community groups came on board, accepting an enormous amount of donations from our generous listeners.
The highlight was the surprise gift of a car to Brendon and his family after they bravely shared their story of homelessness. Listener Heather was so moved by Brendon’s story that she gifted him a station wagon that she was about to sell online. At today’s broadcast, Brendon was also presented with some power tools, donated by listener Jonathon. An extremely grateful Brendon told me that it’s the boost he and his family need to get back on their feet.
To every person who attended the broadcast, listened in, volunteered or donated to the Breakfast Blitz, THANK YOU. You have made a significant difference to the lives of those who really need it. You’ve enabled Uniting WA to keep serving breakfast at the Tranby Engagement Hub in Northbridge, which is Perth’s only 365-day-a-year crisis support facility.
I am genuinely humbled by your generosity and so grateful for your support. You can have a look at some of your generous donations here.
I’ll chat to you again on Monday from 5am.
