New coral discovered: Scientists working with the Queensland Museum have uncovered a new species of coral hidden in plain sight. They've found table coral, once considered to be a single, widespread coral type, is actually multiple species from smaller geographic ranges. Researchers say the coral comes from 16 distinct species, five of which are new to science. The museum's senior corals curator Dr Tom Bridge says the findings are groundbreaking.
Alleged car thefts and break-ins: Six central Queensland teenagers will face court in the coming months after being charged with more than 100 property offences. Police allege eight boys, aged from 13 to 19, were involved in car thefts and break-ins in Blackwater throughout July and August. The boys were arrested and charged after several search warrants were issued last week. Two of the boys, aged 13 and 15, were dealt with under the Youth Justice Act. Five of the others, aged 13 to 16, will appear before the Blackwater Children's Court. The 19-year-old will appear before Blackwater Magistrates Court later this month.
Townhouses, but no shopping complex: Supermarket giant Coles will build townhouses in Rockhampton after plans for a new shopping centre were halted. Coles bought the former Bunnings site on Yaamba Road in 2018 for almost $10 million after the hardware store moved. The company gained approval in 2023 for a shopping centre including a Coles supermarket, to be built on the site, however it was taken to the Queensland planning court and Coles withdrew the project. Coles then forged ahead with plans for 12 four-bedroom two-storey townhouses to be built at the rear of the site. The Rockhampton Regional Council approved that development this week. The planning report states the front area of the land will remain available for future commercial development.
Renewable energy consultation: A central Queensland council is continuing public consultation sessions to hear from residents about proposed renewable energy projects. The Rockhampton Regional Council is seeking feedback on introducing a "temporary local planning instrument". The instrument would be used when assessing development applications for renewable energy and battery storage facilities. Consultation sessions have been held in Rockhampton, Gracemere and Bouldercombe, and the next one will take place at Alton Downs next week.
Water supply funding: Woorabinda residents will receive a new water treatment plant with $35 million from the state and federal governments. Residents have been on boil water alerts for 10 months. Mayor Terence Munns says there is no firm timeline of when the new plant will be completed but the first step will be working to remove the need for alerts.
Radar offline: The Bureau of Meteorology's Gladstone radar is offline for the second time this year. The bureau says technicians are currently investigating and working to have the radar back online as quickly as possible. It says forecasts and warnings are not affected by the outage as they are based on a combination of several observational systems such as satellites, automatic weather stations, rain gauges and hydrological monitoring stations. The bureau says the Taroom, Gympie and Emerald radars provide overlapping coverage of the Gladstone area and the public can check the bureau's MetEye service and satellite images for additional weather information. The radar also experienced an outage in January.
RFDS auxiliary in limbo: The future of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Rockhampton Auxiliary is uncertain after the position of secretary remained unfilled after its annual general meeting. Auxiliary president Linda Louttit says it would be devastating to lose the group, which has been operating out of the city for 30 years. Auxiliaries across the state raise money for the RFDS.
CQ netballer re-signs with Firebirds: Rockhampton's Isabelle Shearer has re-signed with the Queensland Firebirds for next year's Super Netball competition. The young defender featured in all 14 matches of the Firebirds' 2025 campaign, ending the season with 12 intercepts, 40 deflections and 13 rebounds in a stand-out year. Shearer made her Queensland Firebirds debut against the Melbourne Vixens in round four of the 2024 season.
