Director Spike Lee’s newest movie is in theatres this weekend, a thriller starring Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky in what our critic calls Lee’s best narrative film in decades. Highest 2 Lowest follows the story of David King (Washington), a music-industry titan who faces a moral dilemma when a teen gets kidnapped. Try to overlook the film’s low-energy melodrama in the first half; the film makes up for it in the end. Read more.

And Canadian actress Supinder Wraich is a star – it’s just too bad nobody knows it yet. With the lead role in CBC’s cop drama Allegiance, the Indian-born, Toronto-raised actress has all the makings of the real deal. The problem? Canada doesn’t have any star system to speak of. Writes film critic Barry Hertz: “If the Canadian screen industry, even in this current era of elbows-up patriotism, cannot find a way to promote one of its own rising stars, then what hope does anyone have?” Read more.
