The Measured Mom

Hi Niepodam,

When I first started learning about the science of reading, I had never even heard of morphology. I thought it was something I didn't really need to understand.

Little did I know that morphology (alongside phonology) is the basis for our entire spelling system - and something even kindergartners can learn about!

For example, the spelling of DOES seems completely irrational, until you realize that it's simply do + es -> does.

Even the word DOESN'T makes sense when you realize that n't can actually be thought of as a suffix: do + es +n't -> doesn't.

Do you have students who can never remember if REALLY has one or two l's? Just show them this: real + ly -> really.

These are called word sums, and you can teach your students to make them using a free tool called a WORD MATRIX.

For example, here's a word matrix for the base DO:

Morphology used to be a complete mystery to me, but now I find it completely fascinating ... and I can't wait to share my session with you at the free Science of Reading Summit! (That's my affiliate link right there.)

During this free, 4-day virtual event, you'll learn about morphology and SO MANY OTHER science of reading related topics.
