Hello Houston,
The statewide death toll from Central Texas floods has increased to 135 people, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott shared on Thursday. More than 100 deaths were in the city of Kerrville.
With Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News, and Austin American-Statesman reporters, our team of Houston ISD reporters have been covering the aftermath and victims of the floods.
We'll be back with more HISD news soon. In the meantime, we have HISD teacher and employee departures data below.

More than 800 teachers left in 2024-25 school year
After employee departures culminated in an exodus in June 2024, employees continued to leave in higher numbers in 2024-25 compared to the five years prior to the state takeover.
More than 3,220 employees, including at least 840 teachers, left Houston ISD from August 2024 through May, exacerbating the higher turnover rates that have plagued the district since the state's June 2023 takeover of the district. The average number of yearly teacher departures rose by 48% in the first two years of the state takeover compared to the five years prior.
A campus breakdown shows the average number of teachers departing in the first two years of the takeover increased by about four teachers per year at both New Education System (NES) campuses formally carrying out reforms and non-NES campuses. You can search your campus here to see departure levels over the years through May 2025.
We will be continuing coverage of departures with June data. If you left Houston ISD in June 2025 and would be open to sharing your story, please email me at nusaiba.mizan@houstonchronicle.com. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences.
