EFSA is seeking feedback on its draft assessment of the health risks of estragole in fennel seed preparations, including herbal infusions. Fennel seed preparations contain estragole, a naturally occurring compound that is genotoxic (may damage DNA) and carcinogenic.

Bird flu: EFSA analyses situation in US and tracks possible routes of spread

The seasonal migration of wild birds and the importation of certain US products could be potential routes for the introduction of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) genotype currently affecting US dairy cows into Europe. This virus type has not been reported so far in any country other than the USA.

African swine fever outbreaks in pigs in the EU are falling

According to EFSA's latest annual epidemiological report, last year African swine fever outbreaks in domestic pigs declined by 83% compared to 2023. The drop was mainly due to fewer outbreaks in Romania and Croatia, and it marks the lowest annual total number of outbreaks in the EU since 2017.

Data collection for MRL review

EFSA reviews on an ongoing basis the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for active substances used in plant protection products. To enable stakeholders to better prepare for and support the MRL review, EFSA maintains a regularly updated progress report on the review programme that was updated in July.

Surveillance of West Nile virus infections in humans and animals in Europe, monthly report

The absence of reported human West Nile virus infections in Europe as of 2 July 2025, alongside a notably lower number of outbreaks in birds and equids compared to 2024, suggests a reduced level of viral circulation in the environment during the early transmission season in 2025.

Re‐evaluation of neotame (E 961) as food additive

The Panel established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) following the re-evaluation of neotame (E 961) as food additive and concluded that there is no safety concern for neotame (E 961) at the currently permitted and reported uses and use levels.

Glossary

Specific migration limit (SML)

The maximum permitted amount of a substance expressed in mg of substance per kg of food (mg/kg) that can migrate from a food contact material (FCM) into food so as not to pose a health risk. Manufacturers need to ensure that FCMs will respect the SML when brought into contact with food, even under the worst foreseeable contact conditions
